Steveless

Shwmae.

Straight down to business, Steveless is me, Dan Newman, and involves makes noisey musics from my bedroom.

I’ve had a couple of years hiatus, but am recently back recording again; the first radio play of this new material elicited the epitaph:

“If you’ve ever wondered what kind of music Captain Beefheart would listen to and go “Pff, that’s a bit weird”; then it would probably be Steveless.”

So says, Adam Walton of BBC Radio Wales. I like that, so I’m using it here to describe myself. Plus it’s bang up to date at the time of writing.

Anyway, these days I sound a bit like this, on The Dennis Hopper Song:

Sometimes, I do Steveless with other folk too. Either:

Which sounds like this, with Mae West:

The former involves Rhys Herdman, Matt Williams and Steve (I know) James; the latter… Syd Howells (how’s that for a dramatic reveal?).

In the past I’ve released records on Cherryade, Taffpop, The International Lo-Fi Underground, FuKu and various other bits and bobs. Recently, a track appeared on a Universal Record compilation too. Quite pleased with that bit of selling out. These have been played across the world, BBC Radios 1, 2, 6, Wales and Bristol in forms I understand, and then across various web based platforms which I don’t. I’ve done gigs, Glastonbury, Ashton Court and BBC Maida Vale being the most memorable. I don’t actually care about any of that, though, and just get off on making a noise of noise in my bedroom.

To those ends, I’ve started a blog, on which I will give away ALL of my sonngs, old and new (couple of hundred to date, I’d guess). This is called Steveless Tunes. Keep checking back there, as I’m periodically sticking up mp3 for free download until I get through it all.

Hwyl fawr.
